A Tunnel to Light: Leka Huie’s Platinum-Winning Interior Photograph
In the Architecture & Urban Photography category of the Best Photography Award UK 2025 Season 1, a striking image titled The Way Out captures both architectural grandeur and emotional resonance. The photo was taken at the Umeda Sky Building (梅田スカイビル) in the Kita district of Osaka, Japan—a landmark designed by renowned architect Hiroshi Hara and famously home to “the world’s highest escalator.”
The photo draws viewers deep into the tunnel of the escalator, offering not only a dramatic perspective but a powerful message. “It’s about the depth of the tunnel—and a futuristic feeling of hope,” the photographer shares. “It’s about finally finding The Way Out.”
One subtle yet impactful detail stands out: a lone figure at the end of the escalator. Their presence brings the composition to life, transforming a vast architectural space into a metaphor for personal journey and emotional release.
From an artistic standpoint, the work is rich in formal technique. “This photo brings together multiple rules of composition,” the artist notes. “Symmetry, leading lines, repeated patterns, framing, and the rule of thirds—all in one frame.”
Ultimately, The Way Out is more than an architectural study. It’s an invitation to reflect, to look forward, and to find hope beyond the tunnel.
“I hope viewers feel the concept of The Way Out—and find their own way.”
