At the World Grand Prix Photography Award Spring 2026, Jui-Chieh Hung received the Silver Award in Fine Art Photography for Branches of Time, a contemplative black-and-white work that transforms natural forms into a poetic meditation on memory, time, and perception.
Through layered branches, blurred blossoms, and subtle tonal gradations, the image exists between abstraction and representation. Rather than documenting nature directly, the photograph invites viewers into an introspective space where time feels organic, fluid, and quietly unresolved.

This photograph captures a view looking upward through a network of tree branches and blooming textures. By presenting the image in black and white, the distraction of color is removed, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythm of lines, spatial depth, and organic structures within the frame.
The branches extend across the sky like veins of time, forming an intricate natural network. The softly blurred blossoms resemble fragments of memories suspended in the air, existing between clarity and ambiguity. This interplay of sharp lines and soft forms suggests the subtle passage of time and the quiet movement of nature.
Through contrast and tonal layering, the work seeks to reveal the hidden order within the apparent chaos of the natural world. When viewers gaze upward into this woven canopy, they are invited into a contemplative moment, reflecting on the relationship between nature, time, and human perception.
Interview
Q. What inspired you to take this award-winning photo?
Hung:
This photograph was inspired by a quiet moment of observation in nature. By looking upward through the branches, I was drawn to the intricate structure formed between chaos and order.
Branches of Time reflects my perception of time as something organic—expanding, overlapping, and constantly evolving. The soft, blurred blossoms symbolize fragments of memory, suspended between presence and disappearance.
Q. Were there any challenges during the process?
Hung:
One of the main challenges was capturing the balance between clarity and ambiguity. I intentionally worked with focus and depth to create a layered visual experience.
Rather than documenting reality directly, I aimed to reinterpret it, allowing the image to exist somewhere between abstraction and representation.
Q. How do you balance technical skill and artistic expression?
Hung:
For me, technical skill is a foundation, but not the destination. I use technique as a tool to support emotion and concept. When both are aligned, the image becomes more than just a visual—it becomes a space for reflection.
Q. What message or feeling do you hope to convey?
Hung:
I hope viewers experience a sense of stillness and introspection. By looking at the image, they may reconnect with the subtle rhythms of nature and reflect on their own perception of time and existence.
Q. What role does photography play in today’s world?
Hung:
In today’s fast-paced visual culture, photography has the power to slow down perception. It allows us to pause, observe, and reconsider what we often overlook. Photography is not only a recording tool but also a way of thinking and seeing.
Editor’s Note
In Branches of Time, Jui-Chieh Hung approaches photography as both observation and contemplation.
The image’s delicate balance between sharpness and dissolution creates a visual rhythm that mirrors the instability of memory itself. Through restraint and atmospheric subtlety, the work encourages viewers to slow down and inhabit a quieter mode of perception—one where time, nature, and inner reflection become inseparable.
