A creative director and longstanding photographer, Shang brings a designer’s sensitivity to visual impact and narrative expression. His account of the work reveals how preparation, technical fluency and chance converge in live-event photography.

Interview

What is the story behind this award-winning photograph?

I had photographed this Taiwanese fire-dance group on more than 30 occasions, but their September 2026 beach performances offered only three opportunities. I attended all three, scouting locations and setting up tripods before noon, then waiting more than nine hours for each show. The challenge was to catch the flames at their greatest height without overexposing them. The success rate was under 30 per cent.

What creative or technical challenges did you encounter?

The performers’ movements are difficult to predict. I used two cameras and two lenses to respond quickly, while refining my position and shooting rhythm through repeated practice. My familiarity with the subject helped me finally capture the moment I had been seeking.

How do you balance technique with artistic expression?

My background as a professional graphic designer makes me attentive to aesthetics and emotional storytelling. When selecting photographs, I review different possibilities and discuss with colleagues what feelings and information each image communicates. That editorial judgement is as important to me as the technical capture.

What do you hope viewers take away from the photograph?

A memorable photograph does not necessarily come from ideal weather or perfect conditions. Beauty can appear for a fraction of a second, faster than we imagine. I want to share both that fleeting visual experience and the story behind the effort it required.

What role does photography play in today’s world?

AI is changing visual culture, but I believe photographs of real moments retain a particular warmth and emotional force. I use authentic images to connect with others and communicate sincerely.

Editor’s Note

Dance of Flames reflects the demanding realities of event photography: long periods of anticipation followed by an instant that cannot be repeated. Shang’s careful preparation and rapid response turn a volatile performance into a deliberate composition.

The Platinum Award recognises not only the visual drama of the flames but the judgement required to photograph them. In an age of increasingly synthetic imagery, Shang’s commitment to the witnessed moment gives the work an additional dimension.
