Frames of Life and Lines of Steel: Wei-Kai Lin James' Award-Winning Pieces in Architectural – Industrial and Documentary Photography

In the quiet spaces of everyday life, moments of reflection unfold with a gentle profundity. For Taiwan-based photographer, Wei-Kai Lin James, these subtle moments became the heart of two award-winning works—Recalling the good old days and Net and Line—both of which earned Silver Awards at the Best Photography Awards UK 2025 Autumn Season.

Working with a keen sensitivity to atmosphere, memory, and structure, James transforms ordinary scenes into contemplative visual narratives. Whether capturing the poignant stillness of an elderly man waiting at a rural coastal station or framing the vanishing geometry of Kaohsiung’s pre-renovated railway tracks, his images explore the relationship between time, place, and the stories that linger in between. Rooted in observation and guided by emotion, his photography invites viewers to pause, reflect, and rediscover the quiet beauty hidden within the everyday.

Q: Could you share the background and setting of this award-winning photo?

James:

''Recalling the good old days: This photo was taken at a rural train station along Taiwan's coastal railway. It was a rainy day, and the damp wooden architecture and quiet surroundings created a nostalgic atmosphere. The elderly man in the wheelchair, with his back turned to the camera, exudes a sense of time and memories, as if lost in thought or reminiscing about the past. The scene resonates deeply with the emotions of the environment.

Net and Line: This photo was taken at Kaohsiung Train Station before its renovation. Captured through the perspective of a metal grid, the shot overlooks the railway tracks stretching into the distance, symbolizing the passage of time and the journey into the unknown. The image preserves a moment of the old station before it disappeared into history.''

Q: Is there a particular detail in this photo that you especially love?008 - Remembrance:

James:

''Recalling the good old days:I particularly love the details of the elderly man’s back and the wooden wheels of the wheelchair. The texture of the wooden wheels and the man’s slightly slouched posture convey the weight of time and the essence of life. Additionally, the blurred train in the background and the lush greenery of the courtyard add a layer of contrast between movement and stillness, enhancing the overall emotion of the scene.

Net and Line: My favorite detail is the composition created by the metal grid. The grid frames the railway tracks, creating a visual guide for the viewer’s eyes. The interplay of the tracks’ linear patterns and the geometric shapes of the grid adds a unique sense of depth, evoking thoughts about the direction of journeys and the choices in life.''

Q: Did you have any specific inspiration or artistic concept in mind during the creation?

James:

''Recalling the good old days: The inspiration for this photo came from reflections on life and the passage of time. Through the solitude of the elderly man’s back, combined with the nostalgic atmosphere of the rural train station, I aimed to express emotions of "waiting" and "reminiscence." The damp texture brought by the rainy weather also adds more narrative depth to the image.

Net and Line: While capturing this shot, my concept was to use "framing" as a metaphor for the constraints and possibilities in life. The presence of the metal grid both obstructs and guides the viewer’s vision, encouraging them to explore the world beyond the frame. The tracks extending into the distance symbolize the unknown and hope for the future.''

Q: What do you hope viewers will feel or reflect upon when they see this photo?

James:

ree

''Recalling the good old days: I hope viewers can feel the solitude of life and the weight of memories, reflecting on how time quietly slips away. Through the elderly man’s contemplative posture, I want to evoke thoughts about significant moments in their own lives and the stories that may have been forgotten.

Net and Line: I hope this photo inspires viewers to think about "journeys," not just in terms of train travel but also the journey of life. The framing of the metal grid prompts reflection on the relationship between limitations and freedom, while the tracks stretching into the distance convey a sense of hope and the unknown.''
