At the World Grand Prix Photography Award Spring 2026, Chuang Ching Wen received the Silver Award in Mixed Media & Conceptual Photography for Part of the Circle of Life, a deeply contemplative work that transforms a quiet encounter with death into a meditation on nature, memory, and impermanence.

Discovered at the entrance of the artist’s rented home, the subject became more than a fleeting moment—it became a reflection on the silent continuity between life and the natural world. Through minimal intervention and emotional sensitivity, the photograph invites viewers to pause and consider the fragile yet cyclical nature of existence.

Interview

Q. What inspired you to take this award-winning photo? Is there a story behind the piece you’d like to share?

Chuang:

Part of the Circle of Life was discovered at the entrance of my rented place.

I saw a small life quietly leaving in front of me.

I don’t know where it finally went,

but from its birth, growth, to its departure,

it felt like a slow fading.

At that moment, I did not feel fear.

Instead, I saw a quiet and intimate connection between it and nature.

It became part of the natural cycle and returned to the environment.

It was a very quiet process,

and that became the initial inspiration for this work.

Q. Were there any challenges during the process of creating this series or image? How did you navigate them?

Chuang:

There were no particular difficulties during the process.

I simply witnessed a small life slowly passing,

and I recorded that moment.

After taking the photo,

I gently placed it back where it was,

without disturbing it.

Q. How do you approach the balance between technical skill and emotional/artistic expression in your photography?

Chuang:

I am still a student,

and I am continuously learning the technical aspects of photography.

In my work, I let technique naturally blend into the process,

while following my own sense of visual feeling and aesthetics.

For me, the image is like my “eyes.”

I simply capture what I truly feel in that moment.

This approach is similar to how I experience painting.

Q. What message or feeling do you hope your photography conveys to viewers?

Chuang:

After completing Part of the Circle of Life,

I became more aware that life is fleeting.

Within such a short existence,

what can we leave behind?

What can we love?

Where can we go?

This work invites a quiet reflection:

after everything fades, what remains in the heart?

Perhaps memories, feelings, or understanding.

It is a reminder to cherish the present

and the preciousness of life itself.

Q. In your view, what role does photography play in today’s world?

Chuang:

To me, photography is like a pair of moving eyes.

It allows us to see and to record,

and to preserve those small yet meaningful moments of life.

Editor’s Note

In Part of the Circle of Life, Chuang Ching Wen approaches photography with remarkable tenderness and restraint.

Rather than dramatizing death, the work quietly acknowledges it as part of nature’s continuous rhythm. Through stillness, simplicity, and emotional honesty, the photograph becomes a meditation on transience—reminding viewers that even the smallest lives carry meaning, memory, and connection.
