Interview

Q. What inspired you to take this award-winning photo? Is there a story behind the piece you’d like to share?

Wang Chun-Chieh:

This photograph captures the moment when the Dajia Mazu, after a ten-year absence, returned to Dajia Jenn Lann Temple following a blessing visit to Tianzhong Township in Changhua County.

The atmosphere was both solemn and vibrant, and being part of it was deeply moving for me.

Q. Were there any challenges during the process of creating this series or image? How did you navigate them?

Wang Chun-Chieh:

Temple festival photography is often defined by fleeting moments. Many scenes vanish in an instant, and once missed, they cannot be recreated or staged again.

Therefore, photographers must remain highly focused at all times, anticipating upcoming rituals and movements in order to capture the most critical moments with precision.

Q. How do you approach the balance between technical skill and emotional/artistic expression in your photography?

Wang Chun-Chieh:

For me, technique is the foundation. I prepare my settings in advance so I can respond quickly, and in critical moments I prioritize capturing emotion and atmosphere—even if it’s not perfect—to preserve the most authentic image.

Q. What message or feeling do you hope your photography conveys to viewers?

Wang Chun-Chieh:

I seek to bring Taiwan’s religious traditions and the warmth of its people into global view.

Through my lens, I move beyond simply documenting acts of worship, striving instead to reveal the profound emotional bond between individuals and their faith. By capturing these moments of devotion, I aim to offer viewers a more intimate understanding of the cultural depth and human warmth that define Taiwanese society.

Q5. In your view, what role does photography play in today’s world?

Wang Chun-Chieh:

In today’s world, photography is no longer merely a tool for recording images; it has become a powerful medium of communication and influence.

It enables the rapid transmission of ideas, shapes perspectives, and preserves history, while in the age of social media, it has also become an essential means for individuals to express themselves and engage with the world.

Editor’s Note

Respectfully Welcoming the Dajia Mazu Return Procession demonstrates the enduring power of documentary photography to preserve cultural heritage while conveying deeply human emotions.

By focusing on a significant moment within one of Taiwan’s most important religious traditions, Wang Chun-Chieh captures more than a ceremonial event. His photograph reveals a living culture sustained by faith, collective participation, and intergenerational continuity. The image invites international audiences to look beyond the spectacle of ritual and discover the warmth, devotion, and shared identity that lie at its heart.

In an increasingly fast-moving world, works such as this remind us that photography remains an essential bridge between communities, histories, and cultures.
