Interview

Q: What inspired you to take this award-winning photo? Is there a story behind the piece you’d like to share?

Dorota: The photo "Black Hole" features a facade of The Broad Museum in Los Angeles, California. Wherever I travel, I always do a lot of research prior to my trip, especially in regards to architecture. That is my passion. When I find a building or a place of particular interest to me, I look at the photos, information, anything I could learn about it. Sometimes, when I finally get to my destination, I feel that I've been there already, because I know so much 🙂

Q: Were there any challenges during the process of creating this series or image? How did you navigate them?Dorota: In this case the process was very easy. I had a few days to stay in LA, and I was able to photograph The Broad Museum at different times - full daylight, golden hour, at night. Because of the white facade and black window, the striking contrast was most dramatic with the night shot. I added a little artistic feel by changing it to black & white.

Q: How do you approach the balance between technical skill and emotional/artistic expression in your photography?

Dorota: So to be honest, I'm not very skilled technically. I don't use Photoshop, Lightroom, or any other program. I try to take advantage of my own artistic abilities. I pay attention to composition, angles, lines, framing, geometry and a flow. I put my emotions into my photographs, and hope to show the simplicity and pureness.

Q: What message or feeling do you hope your photography conveys to viewers?

Dorota: Beside what I wrote above, I truly hope that people will see the beauty of modern architecture. It is so much criticized and disapproved by many, I wish the viewers would stop for a moment and take a deeper look. Even if they still do not agree, at least they looked and perhaps started to think from a different perspective.

Q: In your view, what role does photography play in today’s world?

Dorota: Photography is a beautiful way of expressing own feelings. Sharing own views with others. Either through Street Photography, Photojournalism, Travel or any Artistic concepts, photography is a story-telling. Everyone can participate in it. Everyone can access it. It can be used as a learning tool. Or a bridge between people. I can't imagine my life without a photography.
