Interview

Q: What initially inspired this project? Was there a particular thought, moment, or question that sparked its creation?

Wong: Drawing inspiration from everyday life, it all started during a gathering with friends. As the pizza was pulled sizzling from the oven and placed on the table, watching the cheese stretch into strings as a slice was lifted created an unforgettable moment that tantalized the taste buds. That sparked an idea: Could wood carving capture this phenomenon? Immediately, I carved 1/8 of a pizza, topped with Hong Kong-style ingredients—pineapple, spicy sausage, mushrooms, herbs, and green peppers. Eventually, eight such slices were combined to form a complete pizza.

Q: What was the most exciting or challenging aspect of bringing this work to life?

Wong: It needs to meet two characteristics: the first is the cheese-pulling effect, and the second is the thick crust with molten cheese sagging. Through continuous revisions and overcoming difficulties, the production process was further simplified, making the work more refined and satisfactory.

Q: How was your experience participating in the UK Future Art & Design Awards?

Wong: I truly never expected to receive recognition from the judges. This surprise has filled me with even more confidence to prepare for my next piece and to embrace the unknown future with more ideas.
